Cleaning blinds and curtains isn’t usually on the daily to-do list, but it’s important to undertake regular cleaning regimes to ensure your window coverings stay looking great for a long time. We recommend setting aside some time once a month to keep them in good shape.
There are many styles and materials you could have that may have slightly different requirements, but most should loosely follow this guide.
Dusting
To keep blinds and curtains clean, it’s a good idea to keep them free of dust. Unfortunately, dust likes to settle in many places in a home, particularly in hard to reach areas. Before any cleaning takes place, if the material is suitable, dust needs to be removed first and foremost.
For blinds, you can take a microfibre cloth and carefully run it on individual slats. You could also used a can of compressed air for those hard to reach places.
For curtains, you can use the soft brush attachment on your hoover to get the dust off. Draw the curtains so that they are closed, or, if you can take them off easily, place them on the floor, then carefully hoover up any dust that has settled. You don’t want the suction to be too strong, so make sure it’s not on the highest setting.
Cleaning
Make sure to check with the manufacturer on what is going to be suitable for the type of blinds and curtains you have.
Most blinds only need a quick wipe down with a slightly damp cloth to remove any bits that may have settled on there. Particularly if they are in the kitchen, you’ll want to make sure no grease and grime gets to build up on the surface. If you have roller blinds, you can use warm, slightly soapy water and gently wipe down the material.
Stain Removal
Some blinds and curtains can fall victim to various stains. Some curtains are machine washable, so make sure to check whether this is possible beforehand. Once washed, make sure to let them airdry. For most curtains, you can arrange to get them dry cleaned. This can give them a new lease of life and keep them looking brand new.
